December 2009

LEAPS:
7 December -- 14 December -- 21 December -- 28 December
2 December Wed Full Moon (Plenilune).
3-6 December Thu to Mon MiDFur 11 - MiDFur At the Movies.
Last year MiDFur was transformed from an annual furry meet to a full blown convention with great success. With entertaining guests of honour, a convention hall and over 230 furry attendees to hang out with and meet, MiDFur was most definitely a lot of fun. Come December 2009 we get to do
it all over again – but bigger and better.

Everything that made MiDFur fun is being improved and expanded upon.
This includes running twice as many events in a better venue where everything is all completely centralised.
On top of this standard registration is $40 cheaper than it was last year.

Read on for details on the new convention location, accommodation and – most importantly – how to register for MiDFur XI.

This year MiDFur XI will be held at The Rydges Hotel in Melbourne (186 Exhibition Street).

Registration

There are limited places, so we encourage people to register as early as possible to secure your spot at MiDFur XI.

These are the three different types of registration available:

Standard ($165)
This gives attendees access to all of the main events of the convention.
This includes the panels, the dealers den and events such as the Gala Ball.

Under 18 ($165)
This registration gives under 18 attendees the exact same access as standard registration attendees. Even the Gala Ball will be open to all ages this year.
We just ask that those under the age of 18 register as such for legal reasons; namely duty of care and to ensure that under age attendees aren’t drinking.

Gold Class ($265)
The Super Sponsor registration allows you to attend all of the events at MiDFur, with the added bonus of a dinner event prior to the main part of the Gala Ball, an exclusive t-shirt and an exclusive panel with the guests of honour.
Note that the Super Sponsor registration is available for attendees of all ages.

(Every 100th person to register will have the nice surprise of finding that their registration is free!)

Day Passes:
$50 - Thursday MiDFur day pass
$60 - Friday MiDFur day pass
$40 - Saturday MiDFur day pass
$50 - Sunday MiDFur day pass

(Registration opened April 10th!)

12 December Sat GetUp WALK AGAINST WARMING.
We need a good news story on climate change - like tens of thousands of Australians turning out this weekend to show their support for strong climate action. Can you be part of that story this weekend, as people around the world join Australians in calling for world leaders to pass the test of our generation?

www.getup.org.au/campaign/MelbourneWAW

Moments like this in history don't come often. A global day of climate action has been declared at the most important point during the Copenhagen meetings.

Where: State Library, Swanston Street, Melbourne
When: This Saturday (Dec 12) at 12pm
Dress (optional): FABulous (Fair, Ambitious, Binding), which means Orange and anything from 80's Glam to modern chic.

This is the test of our political generation. Our leaders need to seriously up the urgency and scope of their thinking at Copenhagen if we're going to address the climate crisis.

The only way they'll do that is if there is enough global outcry to shake them from their slumber - right now they're acting as if the planet's survival is something they can negotiate their way around. World leaders need to be pushed, if we are to get the best scenario out of these do-or-die talks:

7 & 8 November Sat & Sun MELBOURNE MEDIEVAL FAYRE AND TOURNEY (MMFAT 2009).
A Clash with the past in the present at the Melbourne Medieval Fayre and Tourney MMFAT ® in 2009!

On the 7th and 8th November 2009, with the clash of Swords, the spatter of musket fire and the boom of cannon you will be transported back into the past at the 7th annual Melbourne Medieval Fayre and Tourney MMFAT® which will once again bring history to life for all ages at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick, Victoria.

This unique Victorian event, allows the public to be transported back into the past over different historical time periods from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, through the medieval period and into the Napoleonic wars of Europe and the American Civil war.

The Fayre features living history group members dressed in Historical costumes, with their historical tents, furniture and weapons. Even the Merchants and Traders that attend the event dress up in historical clothing. The performers that attend the event also showcase some interesting types of entertainment, coupled with the members of some of the Craft Guilds in Victoria demonstrating their old crafts, it makes for an interesting weekend.

The Melbourne Medieval Fayre and Tourney™ was started by the Ordo Equester Aurei Cervi (Inc.), an Order of Knights that is a benevolent and philanthropic group assisting Charities and people in need when it can, as a way of showcasing the Living history groups within Victoria to the public, while providing a reasonably priced event for the family to have time together, no matter their financial circumstances.

Each year, money raised by the Fayre goes towards supporting and sponsoring children at the Variety Club Childrens Christmas Party.

So if your looking for an inexpensive family day out with a difference, that assists Charities, allow yourself to be transported back into history and get up close and personal with medieval sword fighting, Knights on Horses, Wellington and Napoleons soldiers firing muskets, and the Yankies and Rebs of the American Civil war trying to blow each other up with their cannons in a fun and friendly way, then this could be the weekend event for you.

24 October Sat GetUp! Get Together Melbourne.
You've heard the phrase 'Think Global, Act Local'? This Saturday is our chance to do just that as the world gathers for the largest climate action ever seen.

With the all-important international climate negotiations in Copenhagen less than 50 days away, GetUp has partnered with 350.org to show world leaders we're ready for real climate solutions. Hundreds of events are being held in Australia and across the globe, from the Taj Mahal to the Thames - and in Melbourne.

The 350 global day of action offers a singular moment to bring together GetUp's grassroots movement with the global push for climate action in Copenhagen. And with the Coalition now trying desperately to get the Government to 'brown-down' their already woefully inadequate climate policy, it's a crucial time for Australians to act.

Melbourne's flagship events will be a mass bike ride and concert. Click here to be a part of these events on October 24th:

350 parts per million is the safe level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. We're already dangerously past that; the cause of the climate crisis. 350 is the solution. That's why every event worldwide will highlight the figure 350: telling our leaders exactly what we expect from them in Copenhagen and at home.

20 years ago, Australia disappointed the world by failing to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Copenhagen offers an extraordinary opportunity for redemption. With thousands of Australians turning out in force this weekend, we can send a powerful message to our political leaders.

The Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme falls far short of the goal of 350 and now they're debating how much further to weaken it. We need to shake our leaders out of their climate slumber, and 350.org events are a great way to do it!

MOVIE DISCUSSION NIGHT: "Santuary."
It's Halloween, and the MSFC's film discussion night features demons. Nice demons. So nice that they need a Sanctuary. The Canadian TV series is known for its strong stories and acting, and if you've not seen Sanctuary then maybe you've seen Star Trek and David Gerrold's episode 'The Trouble with Tribbles'? Or maybe you've seen the film Gremlins? These are touchstones for the comic horror mystery sci-fi of tonight's episode of Sanctuary.

A parody of the series done for Red Nose day charity. it stars Rowan Atkinson, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Grant, Joanna Lumley. The Doctor invites his old foe the Master to meet him on the planet Tersurus. The planet is in ruins, and was the home of a now-vanished race of supremely-enlightened beings shunned by all because they used flatulence as their means of communication. They all died when one of them discovered fire.

LEAPS:
7 September -- 14 September -- 21 September -- 28 September
1 September Tue
"THE JULIAN PARADOX"
WORLD PREMIERE SCREENING - ONE NIGHT ONLY!

The much anticipated Premiere screening of The Julian Paradox movie will be on Tuesday 1st September – at the Astor Theatre, Victoria. Final production is complete and this one-off public screening will re-unite the cast and crew along with their friends, family and the general public. This is an occasion to bask in the footlights of the majestic Astor Theatre and share the culmination of independent film making. An open discussion will follow the screening.

8:00pm - Tuesday 1st September, The Julian Paradox film will have its only public screening at the renowned Astor Theatre (St Kilda) prior to submissions on the international film festival circuit.

The screening will run approximately one hour, followed by an open forum for questions to the producers (Kurt Otto Peterson, Rob Lind & John Weeks), director Liam Firmager or to the cast and crew. Original sound tracks by Kurt Otto Peterson will be playing in the foyers. He will also be available to autograph a limited number of books for sale.

This short film is shot in high definition digital format. The camera was fitted with an adaptor system to allow traditional filters to be added, giving the film a more 'celluloid', warmer appearance. Classical tracks have been given a period feel, with original music added to bring other dimensions. Locations in Chirnside Park and Lysterfield served as settings for WWII Britain, with Melbourne's weather co-operating with 'chilling' effect.

This production arose from the hardback novel published last year. It is aimed at raising awareness and seeking investors for a full feature film version to be released for general distribution. The short film will be targeted at film festivals in Australia and internationally. Potential investors are encouraged to attend this screening and to contact Lamplight Cinema.

Snacks, brewed coffee and drinks (alcohol to be confirmed) will be available at the Astor's very reasonable prices. Admission for the screening is $10, but a VIP list will provide free entry to all cast, crew and contributors to the production. The Film Classification Board has restricted admission to persons over 18.

Bookings are not required however we are interested in knowing who may be interested in attending this special event so that we can adequately accommodate the seating arrangements. Simply contact us with your expression of interest.

Exploring largely in-camera photographic techniques such as matting, multiple exposing, pixilation, re-photography and colour separation etc., Tuohy seeks to find a nexus between his subject and his spring wound camera, aspiring to take us inside the landscapes – both human and natura – his films explore.

22-23 August Sat & Sun TONY BONES ENTERTAINMENT presents "Nobody Owns the Moon."
Great news! To coincide with the launch of Book Week 2009, Tony Bones Entertainment will be bringing their show of “Nobody Owns The Moon”, based on the book by Tohby Riddle, to the general public!

You can book tickets for you & your children right now.

“Nobody Owns The Moon” has been short listed by The Children’s Book Council of Australia for the 2009 “Picture Book of the Year” award. It is a wonderful story with messages about friendship, belonging & self worth.

Tony Bones have been touring Theatre in Education shows in schools around Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania for the past 10 years. “Nobody Owns The Moon” has received such positive feedback this year that we have decided to open the show up to the public for the kids who haven’t been lucky enough to see us at their school, or for many to bring their parents along to watch it again! We will be performing this show at six venues across metropolitan Melbourne on the weekend of August 22nd & 23rd (details below).

Celebrate the beginning of Book Week by joining us at six locations throughout Melbourne for an unforgettable theatre experience.

"Clive Prendergast is a fox with a regular job and a place to call home. His friend Humphrey is a struggling donkey with no fixed address. Life in the city is a mixed bag for these two, but a special-looking blue envelope is about to change everything - at least for one wonderful night. Set in a bustling big city, “Nobody Owns the Moon” is a whimsical story about friendship and belonging."

About the play:
In the tradition of the sellout shows “The Night Garden”, “Water Witcher” and “Irving the Magician”, Tony Bones Entertainment will perform “Nobody Owns the Moon” for the general public. The clever costumed characters encourage the audience to interact and participate, while bringing the books to life on stage.

Suitable for children aged: 3 -10 years

Duration: 40 minutes.

Ticket bookings: www.tonybones.com.au or phone 1300 762 545 (booking fees apply for phone bookings).

The entire film is shot in a small house and its porch, and relies on the conversation of the characters at a farewell party to keep the plot moving.

"I have just one more Melbourne concert before I head to the US, and it’s a very special one indeed. Before I was writing my own material I honed my craft by singing the beautiful old songs of the 30’s and 40’s in a jazz outfit led by my friend Roger Perrin. About once a year, Roger returns from his home base of London and we gather together our musical friends and put on a show. A few years ago we recorded one of these shows and released the CD "A Night of Jazz". Well, Roger is making a visit to Melbourne at the end of August - just in time before I leave for my next US tour. Special guest for the evening will be the wonderful Kerri Simpson. So dress up in your movie star finery and enjoy a night of gorgeous tunes."

Glenn Barr “Elsewhere”
New Paintings, Drawings and Prints by Detroit artist Glenn Barr

Outré Gallery
JULY 1-12, 2009

Outré Gallery welcomes back Detroit artist GLENN BARR for a solo exhibition of his noir pop visions of city life, dark dreaming and urban mythology.

Glenn Barr - 'Saturday Night'

Glenn’s work has everything to do with the city. The dark side of city life – the laneways, clubs and secret interiors are the backdrop to his painterly world.

This world depicts a noir underbelly that parallels our own with reckless melodrama - from the cosmopolitan fringe of society, and the peripheral creatures that inhabit it.

SCIENCE ISSUES CAFE is a monthly discussion group in North Carlton (Melbourne, Australia) which allows lay people to get together and hear about the latest research or discuss the big issues in science today.

The phrase use it or lose it is commonly used in our vocabulary however is often associated with the physical. Exercise regularly or lose your fitness. It is now becoming evident that the same applies to your brain. Keep your mind active or lose brain function. And just like you need to vary the types of exercise you do, your brain also benefits from diverse experience.

Emma Burrows works with Associate Professor Tony Hannan at the Florey Neuroscience Institute and in their laboratory they are testing how exposing mice to stimulating or enriched environments improves their memory and mood. She will comment on how keeping mice active with toys and novelty has been shown to increase performance in memory tasks, strengthen connections in the brain and is beneficial for a number of mouse models of brain disease.

"The Good, the Bad and the Painful" - Actors Who Think They can Sing!

Nimoy vs. Deschanel, Spiner vs. Downey Jnr., Shatner vs. Shatner.

At the MSFC this Friday, Craig Irvine (Club Librarian that plays music in the Library) takes you through some of the high, low and not-quite lights of what happens when an actor decides that what those people talking in rhythm do isn't so hard to do. Yes, there will be William Shatner, but there will be other SF and Fantasy-related actors doing their bit for the world of music, be it help or hindrance. However, we guarantee that Carrie Fisher's "Life Song" from the Star Wars Holiday Special will not make an appearance.

Paradoxically being neither little, solemn nor especially liturgical in spirit, the miracle of the Petite Messe Sollennelle is that in the end it is also deeply moving. Gloriana is joined by soprano Danielle Calder, mezzo Caroline Vercoe, tenor Jacob Caine, bass-baritone Sam Dundas, Elyane Laussade on piano and Christopher Cook on harmonium.

Glenn Barr “Elsewhere”
New Paintings, Drawings and Prints by Detroit artist Glenn Barr

Outré Gallery
JUNE 19 - JULY 12, 2009

Outré Gallery welcomes back Detroit artist GLENN BARR for a solo exhibition of his noir pop visions of city life, dark dreaming and urban mythology.

Glenn Barr - 'Saturday Night'

Glenn’s work has everything to do with the city. The dark side of city life – the laneways, clubs and secret interiors are the backdrop to his painterly world.

This world depicts a noir underbelly that parallels our own with reckless melodrama - from the cosmopolitan fringe of society, and the peripheral creatures that inhabit it.

26 June Fri DISAPPEAR HERE
FRIDAY JUNE 26

An evening of contemporary dance, acting art and air punching anthems.

Following the hugely successful juke-joint inspired club night, Sweet Jelly Roll, events duo Supple Fox present a radically different experience with the launch of their new event, Disappear Here.

Inspired by underground art movements like London's Act Art and legendary New York club Paradise Garage; Disappear Here, is an attempt to create a live arts experience that exists for one night only.

Featuring work by choreographers Abigail Sebaly and Ben Handcock, a sound installation by Morgan McWaters (The Emergency), DJ’s Shags, Treasure Island, Bromance and Herbie Hand-me-a-cock performance artists Queenspiracy and video artist Olaf Meyer.

Disappear Here is a truly collaborative project that takes contemporary dance, video art, lighting installations, original music, air punching anthems and errr... a marching band and piles them all into a giant confetti canon that catapults into the audience in a fleeting moment of glorious confusion.

Featuring work by choreographers Abigail Sebaly and Ben Handcock, a sound installation by Morgan McWaters (The Emergency), performances by Queenspiracy and Furries Revenge and video artist Olaf Meyer. DJ’s Shags, Squid Roe, Treasure Island and Bromance playing anything and everything that you can dance to.

Kicking off proceedings will be a contemporary dance marching band procession from Flinders Lane to the venue. To witness the mayhem of a marching band in a 711 stake out Elizabeth Street between 9 - 10pm.

Lastly, it wouldn't be a Supple Fox event without a dress up element. We encourage you to come anonymously. Disguise yourself in drag, furry suits, face paint, wigs or a full enclosure gimp suit if that's what you're in to.

When: Friday June 26th , from 9pm.
Where: Mercat Cross, 456 Queen Street.

8-24 May Fri to Sun CLOC MUSICAL THEATRE presents "MISS SAIGON."
From the writers of "Les Miserables", comes another of the most popular musicals of all time, "Miss Saigon". Based on Puccini's opera, Madame Butterfly, this epic production centres on the romance between a strong-willed Vietnamese woman and an American soldier during the Vietnam War.

Set in 1975 during the final days leading up to the American evacuation of Saigon, Miss Saigon is the story of two young lovers tom apart by the fortunes of destiny and held together by a burning passion and the fate of a small child. This musical masterpiece with its soaring melodies and powerful emotions has captured hearts - and awards - around the world.

A stirring blend of soaring love ballads, heart-warming melodies, electrifying marches and more, the score of Miss Saigon has been acclaimed as uplifting, exuberant hopeful and true. Unforgettable songs such as "The Heat is On in Saigon," "The Movie in My Mind," 'Why God Why?," "Sun and Moon," "The Last Night of the World," "The Morning of the Dragon," "l Still Believe," "Bui-Doi," and "The American Dream" powerfully conjure up the steamy nights, crowds, passion and the danger of Saigon.

9 May Sat 2009 Green Left Weekly Comedy Debate: “This is the Global Financial Crisis we HAD to have”

Does anyone still remember Labor Treasurer (later Prime Minister) Paul Keating’s announcement that it was the “recession we had to have” in 1987?

Comedy ringmaster Rod Quantock is back for the debate that started it all...the Green Left Weekly Comedy Debate.

Fresh from "Rod Quantock Eats Himself" (Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2009) in which Rod tried to tackle climate change by eating himself first before other predators get him... he is back in the flesh to preside over a new line up of comedians in 2009 to tackle yet another crisis...the Global Financial Crisis.

So what's a few dodgy “sub-prime” mortgages between comedians?

And is Generation Y better equipped than others to cope with this Global Financial Crisis?

How can we all share in the yummy corporate bailouts and fat cat handshakes?

Featuring MC Rod Quantock and two caring and sharing panels, well warmed up from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2009 consisting of:

  • Shiralee Hood and Darren Parker, 'Deadly Funny' awardees and indigenous comedians.
  • Comedy stalwart and Melbourne funny woman Wendy Little ('The Middle Ages', Melb International Comedy Festival 2009).
  • Mohammed El-Leissy (‘Fear of a Brown Planet’).
  • Comedy upstarts Mathew Kenneally (“The Post Hope Express”, MICF 2009) & Courteney Hocking (“Miss Right”, MICF 2009).

Our comedians will not accept bribes in the form of $900 Rudd bonuses or other attractive door prizes...

Seats are limited – sells out every year (the debate, not the comedians)

VAMPIRES!

This Friday night at the Club, our Vice-President Sam Rooney talks about vampires past and present. Glamorous, attractive and to die for? Or are they just overgrown mosquitoes that treat humans like cattle? Are they human, or is falling in love with a vampire an inter-species act? How has the legend changed over time? Was Buffy a one-person pest destruction outfit? What are the best vampire novels and films? Is Love At First Bite one of the great film titles? How pretentious is the variant spelling 'vampyre'? Was Nosferatu just misunderstood? Can a late-era Anne Rice book be read to the end and could Stephanie Meyer write without adverbs and adjectives? Will blood pudding be served?

These are questions.

Come to the Club for answers. This Friday night.

Doors open 8pm, hot food served, doors close 11.00pm, Sam's talk starts at
9.00pm. Please join us, it'll be a good night.

Saoirse (Pronounced: SEER- sha)
Saoirse (meaning freedom – relating to movement) are a vibrant vocal and dance trio from Melbourne. Saoirse delight their audiences with their beautiful renditions of traditional Irish ballads and original works, they will join hands to offer some spirited jigs and reels to get your feet tapping. This enchanting group is comprised of Bernadette O’Neill (Belfast) on bodhran and vocals, Kerry McManus (Melbourne) on whistle and vocals, Sile Coleman (Kildare) on guitar and vocals, and the wonderful Anthony O'Neill (Melbourne) on guitar. Saoirse wowed audiences at the 2007 Celtic Nations Concert, and at festivals such as Beechworth, Apollo Bay, & were true favourites at the National Celtic Festival, Portarlington in both 2007 & 2008. Saoirse recorded their first album which was released in Sept 07. All tracks were recorded by wonderfully talented Anthony O'Neill.

Continuing to sing up a storm throughout Victoria's festivals and music venues, Saoirse have evolved into a four piece band, embracing Irish culture, from ancient to present day.

Saoirse performances offer their audience the opportunity to participate in both song, and spirit, with the addition of original songs, penned by Síle Coleman. Singing in English and in Irish, and harmonising beautifully, Saoirse have a unique combination of voices and instruments and they delight audiences wherever they perform. They weave their rich Celtic heritage through song, Irish tunes and dance.

FEBRUARY 7. MODEL: Yana Alana.

Yana Alana

"She's frightening, alarming, but very, very funny." Melbourne Star.

A performance poet and lady-of-certain-talents, Yana Alana is an old fashioned diva with a potty mouth and an outlook which is female-centric and decidedly not politically correct.

Yana Alana is the alter ego of Sarah Ward, also known as MC Sheila from SistaShe. A night with Yana may include tantrums, the hurling of targeted abuse, divine singing, acrobatic dancing and some incisive home truths. She has certainly devoured the boy in flamboyant.

Winner of the Melbourne Fringe Cabaret Award 2007.

BITE ME nominated for 7 Green Room awards.

Audrey Kawasaki Showcase
Outré Gallery Melbourne, February 2009.

Audrey Kawasaki has carved a niche with her perfected visions of exotic Lolita delicacies. With a touch of whimsical lightness and moments of art nouveau stylistic flourishes she has won many hearts world-wide.

The themes in Audrey Kawasaki's work are contradictions within themselves. Her work is both innocent and erotic. Each subject is attractive yet disturbing. Audrey's precise technical style is at once influenced by both manga comics and Art Nouveau. Her sharp graphic imagery is combined with the natural grain of the wood panels she paints on, bringing an unexpected warmth to enigmatic subject matter.

The figures she paints are seductive and contain an air of melancholy. They exist in their own sensually esoteric realm, yet at the same time present a sense of accessibility that draws the observer to them. These mysterious young women captivate with the direct stare of their bedroom eyes.

Ethereal and disembodied Her characters drift into existence often disembodied or as if through the veils of misty reality. Missing limbs. Floating heads. These ladies are from a ghost world.

This is Audrey's first Australian exhibition and will feature a beautiful selection of rare sold-out prints plus one brand new original painted especially for this showing. A new print edition exclusive to Outré will be released at this time.

As Audrey's editions are known to sell out in mere minutes, Outré has a waiting list operating for potential collectors.

Audrey will not be out from the States for this exhibition, but her works are sure to speak for themselves in volumes.

Outre Show dates: 14 February 2009 until the end of February.

Opening Night by invitation only: Friday 13 February 2009 from 7pm.

Address: Outré Gallery, 249 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne 3000.
